Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey addressed the RegalCare nursing home crisis that happened under her watch.
NBC Boston reports that Massachusetts is moving to strengthen its oversight of nursing homes after an investigation exposed serious gaps in how the state approves facility owners.
Governor Maura Healey said new regulations would give the state powers it previously lacked to scrutinize nursing home owners and hold them accountable. The changes follow mounting criticism of the state’s handling of nursing home acquisitions and concerns that existing oversight failed to protect residents.
“Well, I want to make sure, as governor, that anyone who is putting a loved one in a nursing home knows and feels that their loved one is going to be well cared for,” Gov. Maura Healey told the News Service in New Bedford on Monday when asked if she was comfortable with DPH’s record of license approvals, including for RegalCare.
